Tracee Ellis Ross Wore an All-White Sequined Suit With a Powerful Message

Tracee Ellis Ross plays many roles—not just as an actress, but as an activist, a life coach, and someone who knows how to wear the hell out of a good suit. Remember that stunning white wide-legged Christian Siriano suit she wore for the AMAs in 2017? It’s etched into our sartorial souls. And Ross has gone and done it again: For W Magazine’s pre-Golden Globes party Friday night, she stepped out in a gorgeous all-white suit covered in glimmering sequins—and symbolism.

Her stylist, Karla Welch, captured Ellis’ look on her Instagram on Saturday with a shot of the actress posing in her #OOTD next to a doorway. Her look, by Carolina Herrera’s new-ish creative director Wes Gordon, features high-waisted, wide-legged trousers, a long tuxedo jacket with buttons elegantly placed at the waist, and minimalist crop top that transforms the look from straight-up showbiz to need-in-my-closet-going-out-look.

But it also pays an important tribute: All-white suits have become a symbol of historic female members of Congress and the legacy of women’s suffrage. And with a record number of women sworn into Congress last week—women now hold roughly a quarter of both houses, with more than a third being sworn in for the first time—it’s the perfect time to make a statement in one.

That’s exactly, it seems, what Ross and Welch intended: As the stylist captioned the pic, “For Our Ladies in Congress ⚡️”

The best part? Check out her footwear. Yep, that’s a pair of Nike Air Force One high-tops—because heels for evening wear should be a choice, not a must.

Enjoy a few more pics of this suit, because it’s so darn stunning.

Ross is no stranger to making larger statements with her outfits: Last year, for example, she wore black designers to once again host the AMAs, showcasing and lifting up some of the industry’s greatest talents.

Here’s to you, Tracee Ellis Ross—and a 2019 filled with more all-white suits.
